Kristin Darragh Mezzo-soprano
Accomplished New Zealand mezzo-soprano Kristin Darragh graduated with a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Auckland in 2000. She made her debut with the New Zealand Opera as Fyodor in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, at the young age of 23, before leaving to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London. Kristin then spent several years at Theater Lueneburg in Germany, where she performed in a number of renowned productions.
After 13 years performing and continuing higher training overseas – mostly in London, New York, and Germany – Kristin returned to New Zealand at the end of 2017 and has since made her name with the NZSO, the APO, and New Zealand Opera in particular; as well as putting on private performances at functions such as fundraisers, weddings, and birthdays.
We will be privileged to hear Kristin speak about her career to date and what she attributes her success to – and also to hear her sing!

RYLA attendees
On Tuesday 30 July, the young leaders sent by our club to RYLA are coming back to present about what they got out of the experience. The corporate sponsors for these Rylarians will be in attendance, i.e. their managers will also be coming along. We will also be awarding the annual Graeme Campbell Memorial Scholarship for the most outstanding Rylarian from our club.
Given that we supported 26 candidates this year, there will be a lot of people at breakfast that morning. For this reason, we are moving over to the Wintergarden at the Northern Club for this meeting. Being in the Wintergarden means breakfast will cost slightly more than normal at $30 per person. Note that the corporate sponsors for these Rylarians are paying their own breakfast costs, i.e. the club is not paying this.
As the Northern Club needs an estimate of Tuesday’s numbers for the Wintergarden earlier than for our usual meetings, please register your attendance by 10.30 am on Friday 26 July.
Please note: Failure to register your attendance can cause problems for Northern Club catering.

How safe is your home?
Sep 24, 2019
“Is your home’s fire safety something you have ever put much thought into? Our presentation will jump start this thinking and provide you with tips and tricks to help keep you and your family safe from fire. Key fire safety topics that will be covered include; smoke alarms, kitchen fire safety, electrical appliances, speed of fire and escape plans.”
Bex Baddeley - Bio “I have been a member of the NZ Fire service now Fire and Emergency NZ since 2004. I am a Station Officer in Kumeu where I live with my husband and four fur babies. In addition to volunteering with the Kumeu Brigade I am also the Senior Fire Risk Management Officer for the Auckland City Area. This role consists of community education, building fire safety compliance and fire investigations. I am also the chairperson of our regions Women’s Advisory Network and have an interest in creating a more diverse and inclusive organisation. Although the fire service has been a large part of my life it hasn’t always been my career, prior to this role I was a vet nurse in a mixed large and small animal clinic.”
Chloe Marshall - Bio “I grew up in Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty and moved to Auckland for University where I attained a Bachelor of Science. Following University I worked for Napier City Council and then the Bay of Plenty Regional Council where I was involved in the Edgecumbe flood response and recovery. In between these jobs I managed to catch a recurring travel bug which has taken me to many places across the globe. Since working for Fire and Emergency as a Fire Risk Management Officer I have been mainly involved with building compliance and public education and was also deployed to Nelson earlier in the year to assist with the Nelson Fires.” |

What is Guess "Who’s Coming to Dinner"? A multiple course dinner prepared in a fellow Rotarian’s home, with guests AND it will be a surprise where you will go to dine until the day before the event. Names will be randomly selected for each dinner location. A great opportunity to get better acquainted with others in a small group setting. How to participate? 1) Volunteer to be a Host. You choose the number of guests you can host. You'll need to provide nibbles, mains and dessert. 2) Sign up to be a guest. Nick Tuitasi QSM Family First NZ – Pasifika & Church Engagement
Nick Tuitasi served with the New Zealand Police for 25 years – much of it on the front lines. In 1992 he was stationed at the Mt Roskill Station, where he primarily worked with young offenders who failed in the school system and were influenced by gang culture. Under his guidance the Mt Roskill Police piloted a ground-breaking youth initiative to help curb an increasing gang problem. This became the blueprint for 45 Police projects throughout NZ working with at-risk youth and their families.
For many years Nick has been a trustee of Family First New Zealand, which is a Christian lobby group founded in March 2006 with the stated objective to "seek to influence public policy affecting the rights and protection of families and promote a culture that values the family”. Earlier this year he became a spokesman for the organisation.
Nick is concerned as to the impact that legalising cannabis will have on our society. It is primarily on this subject that he will talk to us on Tuesday.
