As the end of the Rotary year approached, we thought we'd share some news stories from some of our committees and members. Enjoy the The Lowdown by the Downtown, from your friendly PR & Membership Committee
Supporting Edmund Hillary Primary School
by Wayne Dyner and Bill Daniels
The Community Services Committee has again sponsored buses for an outing, following the success of the museum trip last year. This year the school chose to go to the beach, since many children had never been to one. The whole school (160 children) plus teachers and parents spent a sunny and educations time at Omana Regional Park near Maraetai. Bill Daniels and Wayne Dyer represented Downtown, and several children came to personally tank us for giving them the opportunity.

By Kat Trevor
We currently have 84 members in the Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland.
In the this Rotary year we have welcomed the following new members to our club: Phil Caughey, Frankie Crellin, Kate Fisher, Martina Evans, Mark Forbes, Julia Heaney, Mahendra Jade, Gareth Juddery, Chris Newman, Sarah Pearce, Emily Sclater, Whitney Smith, Karen Spencer & Letitia Stenberg.
In terms of diversity, 38% of our membership are female while 12% of our membership is under the age of 30. We openly welcome people from different cultures and orientations.
While most of our members are Kiwis, we've also have members from India, Holland, England, Japan, Canada, Ireland, America as well as a few cheeky Aussies (that I am aware of, but we may have more cultural diversities represented).
Please, bring a friend to Rotary, and tell them about what we do.
Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Auckland
by Rachael Steller
As many of you know, RCDA has a longstanding relationship with Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand. Our club helped set up the first House in New Zealand (the Domain House) through a telephone campaign to raise funds for the House. We have also been involved in expansions of the Domain House, and the establishment and recent expansion of the Grafton Mews House.
I began volunteering for RMH shortly before joining RCDA approximately two years ago. It is always a pleasure to see our Clubs' presence throughout the House on these shifts, and makes me proud to be a member. I have also had the opportunity to meet several ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) families. ROMAC provides medical treatment within Australia and New Zealand for children 15 years and under, who are from developing countries and require treatment not available to them in their own country.
I am a duty support volunteer fortnightly on Sundays at the Domain House, which involves completing a variety of tasks for the duty manager to help the families staying at the house. This can include anything from helping a family figure out which part of the hospital they need to go to for an appointment, to giving tours of the House to new families, to restocking or helping prepare food in the shared kitchens, to cleaning rooms. I enjoy helping the staff and families at the House, and strongly recommend volunteering there to anyone who is interested.
RMH is always looking for more volunteers. There are weekly and fortnightly volunteer options at a variety of times to suit any schedule, as well as a variety of volunteer roles. They particularly struggle to find weekday volunteers, so if you are retired or have a flexible work schedule, your help would most certainly be appreciated. However, weekend and evening volunteers are always welcome as well. If you are interested in furthering RCDA's partnership with RMH by volunteering, email me at rachael.steller@gmail.com and I will put you in touch with the right people!
