JULY 2022
From the President

Dear All,

What a great start to the new Rotary year… kicked off with an excellent Changeover on 1st July in a superb new venue for us, The Grand Millennium Hotel.  A highlight of the evening was the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow by outgoing President Christine to Frankie Crellin, a truly worthy recipient of this prestigious Rotary award. We were all very pleased to have the opportunity to catch up with Peter Wilson, Colin Nicholas and others we haven't seen in a while, and of course partners and spouses of our members.

And outgoing President Christine Fenby herself was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow with One Sapphire for her tremendous work during her year in reorganisng the Club back to its core functions and holding it all together during continuing difficult times, including the August to December Auckland lockdown, as well as advancing initiatives such as the agreement with the Well Foundation for the next Battle of the Suits.

Then on 5th July we had a most inspiring first guest speaker of the year – Kerryn Thrupp, CEO of Woven Earth, a not-for-profit very worthy of our attention – please take a look at her website, from where you can easily make a secure donation if you’re moved by the good work they do: https://wovenearth.org.nz/

Our second meeting of the year 12th July was nearly a disaster with our scheduled guest speaker, Abbas Nazari, unable to reach Auckland due to the atrocious weather grounding his flights. Abbas will be rescheduled at a later date so watch out for the speaker notices – his story sounds inspiring if you just google his name, and the theme very much continues the theme set by our guest speaker on 5th April 2022, Kerry Nickels, National President of Red Cross NZ who spoke to us about the plight of refugees.

Fortunately, Tony Keegan came to the rescue and roped in his Probus buddy Guy Slocum, CEO of Health Concern (NZ) to talk to us about using concentrated natural products to delay the aging process and explaining the science behind it – if anybody is interested in “staying younger longer” then feel free to contact Guy on 027 895 2909 or 09 534 3530 or support@healthconcern.co.nz

We also had our first visiting Rotarian from overseas on 12th JulyJason Slater from the Rotary Club of Redding in Northern California (District 5160) – how cool is that – and it means we got our first banner exchange of the year:

The leadership team had our first Board Meeting on 14th July and laid the foundations for a great year. Not every team put in a report in time, but I know some are already working on various things – including Youth planning a fashion show fundraiser slated for 31st August; plus Fundraising & Events are making progress on our long-awaited Quiz Night also late August most likely Thursday 25th; and Membership are hoping to put on a membership drive meet & greet in September for city professionals, to name but a few.  The board agreed in principle to look at options for a joint venture with our sister club Osaka Dojima this Rotary year, more to follow on that.  Also our 8 Honorary Members were reconfirmed for 2022/23... and most exciting, Gill Johnston and Peter Wilson were elevated to Honorary Member status from this year as well!  Please join me in extending congratulations to them both.

Tuesday 19th July we were privileged to hear from Mark Todd, Chair of the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) – so those of us in the finance and investment sector got to hear first hand what our regulator has in store for us in the coming years... and how they're growing their headcount from about 300 to 400 and their budget from $57m to $80m by 2025/26... that's a whole lot of red tape!  Chris Osbourne, President of Auckland City Rotoract joined us again to share his vision of Rotoract and Rotary working closer together again this year - as we have in the past, and hopefully they had a good turnout at their "handover" function this evening in the Ellen Melville Centre.

Super exciting is the famous RYLA Breakfast next Tuesday 26th July – be sure to register early for that!  It will be in the Wintergarden and with all the usual RYLArians and corporate sponsors etc. it will be HUGE, so don't miss it!  Note the breakfast charge will be a little more than normal to cover the cost of the room.  Unfortunately (for me not you) I’ll be away, but fortunately (for us all) Past President Rob Wills has agreed to take the meeting – and of course expect to hear from Grant Hally whose team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes on RYLA (thanks from us all).

Then be sure to come along to our Club Assembly on 2nd August, when we’ll hear from the Team Leads / Committee Chairs on their plans for the coming year, and how you can get involved and help out.

Meanwhile I’ll attach the final Teams & Roles for the year with this, if I can figure out how – if not I’ll distribute by email.

So… there’s lots on this year and plenty of ways to get involved and to make a difference… let’s think big as we emerge from two years of lockdowns and imagine what we can achieve to make up for lost time… as new RI President Jennifer Jones says – “Imagine Rotary”.

Yours in Rotary,
Simon Walton
