At this week's meeting we heard from Liz Jamieson on the stages of Addiction. She has published her book, Still Standing and has been a respected counsellor and educator for over 20 years. She has been involved in alcohol and drug abuse programmes in New Zealand schools, prisons and even the United States Navy. She has received a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, which makes her half a dame, and has strong views on New Zealand's stance on substance abuse and how it should be tackled.
Join us next meeting to hear from John Fauvel who is a Past President of Toastmasters International. His topic is "New Zealand's Aerotropolis".
Our Guests
We had a vibrant Rotary meeting this week with over 10 guests - a mix of family members, rylarians, exchange students, host families and colleagues. We heard from Kiara, one of our exchange students, about her time visiting NZ, Australia and Bali. She also touched on her newfound passion for environmental issues and responsibility.
Tree Planting
The tree planting day on Motuihe was a great success. There were 8 RCDA members who brought the families along and enjoyed a well earned BBQ at the end of the day. Together they planted over 1300 trees. Join the environmental committee for the next one on 10th September.
Speaking Programme
We are looking for more talented speakers for our Speaker Programme in the new Rotary year. We are a modest bunch, but I'm sure you know some interesting speakers, sportspeople, business leaders and charity workers. please invite them to speak at our club. Get in touch with Tony Keegan for speaking slots.
Host Families Needed
Stuart Rowe is looking for 2 more host families for our Austrian Exchange Student who arrives in NZ shortly. Please contact Stuart on 021 926-921 if you can help.
Auckland Club Visit
Several club members attended the Auckland Club to hear Winston Peter speak on Monday lunchtime. Kenneth said it was a good visit, and there are likely to be more political speakers to see in the new year.
Community Services
We've received a kind donation of 80 pack packs for the students at the Edmund Hillary school. These will be dropped off by Dr Bill Daniels.
