Sally Wenley was brought up in rural Hawkes Bay and excelled at sport –  then in 1987 at the age of 16 a school bus crash left her a paraplegic.

Sally graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English, while at Massey she was involved with the student newspaper and radio. She obtained a post grad Diploma in Broadcast Journalism and moved to Auckland to work at TVNZ. Post TVNZ Sally worked for Radio New Zealand, during her time there Sally won four Qantas Media awards for radio reporting.

After becoming a mother Sally freelanced and continues to do so – writing features and being on Radio NZ’s ‘The Panel’ as well as regularly reviewing books for its morning programme with Cathryn Ryan.

Sally’s career now has a parallel focus on governance and she has completed a course through Massey university. She has been a director on the Occupational Therapy board, and the Ponsonby Community Centre. She currently volunteers as a director on the National Riding for the Disabled
Board and is deputy president for Spinal Support. which she will tell us more about today.
