First Downtown Rotary Meeting of 2021
Jan 19, 2021 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Please join us for the first meeting back of the New Year. We've planned a fun fellowship event for you all so you can mix and mingle with friends and family too. Please note, there is no charge for under 18s to this event so bring along your extended family if they might find it interesting.

We are kindly being hosted by Sustainable Coastlines who will give a short speech about what they do for conservation.

Sustainable Coastlines is looking forward to hosting The Rotary Club of Downtown Auckland at their wonderful Flagship Education Centre -a truly unique building that was designed to align with the Living Building Challenge the most sustainable building framework possible.

We'll hear from Stephanie Vercoe, Strategic Partnerships Director, about their mission to enable people to look after the coastlines and waterways they love. We'll learn about how Sustainable Coastlines work with their sleeves rolled up to keep coastlines and waterways healthy and beautiful, by delivering coastal clean-up events, educational programmes, riparian planting projects and by training community groups to become citizen scientists to gather data on the litter they find on our beaches.

This meeting is charged at the usual $25 per person fee, and this includes some lovely finger food that will be served at the event.

This venue is BYO, so please bring along something to drink and share for the evening.

There is plenty of parking in the Jellicoe Street carpark and on surrounding side streets, at a reasonable price.

Hopefully the sun is shining and we can enjoy the good weather together with members, friends and family alike.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Iris Schmidbauer - Cliff Diver

The sport and overoming fear

Mar 23, 2021

Iris Schmidbauer has hurled herself off high places all over the world while competing on the Red Bull Cliff Diving circuit — and is one of just three women who can do a back triple somersault with double twist from 20m.

But it’s not just the height factor that Iris has to get over when she competes, with divers like herself also hitting the water at about 80km/h.

Iris came to New Zealand on a well-earned holiday at the end of last year's competition but thanks to Covid-19 has been training here ever since.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, with the self-taught cliff diver using the chance to brush up on the basics, even if it is in two parts from the 10-metre platform.

The 2020 season's events were cancelled, which means the 25-year-old spent the whole year in New Zealand. But she’s hoping to stay longer after applying for a talent visa.
