President's Message

How often have you heard that the young people of today are the future leaders of tomorrow? While the future may seem far away- our role as today’s leaders is to prepare the next generation by sharing our wisdom, experience and hope. It’s no simple task and requires lots of patience and empathy, but the results are well worth it.
This week our guest speaker was Ray Calver, Youth Justice Senior Practioner at Ministry of Children. Ray shared with us his personal experience in working in the Youth Justice system with children under the age of 17. Ray spoke about how important it is for young people to have exposure to positive role models - especially male role models. Ray shared how the mother of one of his mentees told him that if it were not for his mentorship and guidance, her son might have gone down one of two pathways- suicide or jail. Ray also reminded us that we all are influencing young people– be it our own children, the friends of our children, or perhaps the neighborhood kids down the street. Positive encouragement and support can go a long way in changing lives.
Several of our Club members are living these ideals and are mentors to students at Auckland Girls Grammar School where they share their knowledge, encouragement, and wisdom. Today we heard students from the YES team - Pure Pacific (students mentored by Frankie Crellin)- speak about their business plan
and their travel pillow product. Hopefully many of you were able to buy a pillow ($20 each). If you like more information on how to support- please contact Heather or Frankie.
Continuing on the theme of youth and leadership, come and meet the 19 young people that our Club sent to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). They will share with us their personal experience in the leadership development camp.
Please register your attendance early as seating capacity for breakfast is 90 people.

RYLArian & Sponsor Visit

Downtown Rotary sent 19 great young people to RYLA in the first week of July. They came from a variety of our corporate sponsors and charities including Ronald McDonald House, Curekids, Graeme Dingle Foundation, and Leukemia and Blood Cancer foundation. Our Club also sponsored a teacher from Auckland Girls Grammar and two people from World Vision.
Join us for our normal breakfast session on Tuesday 7th August to hear the stories our 19 RYLArians have to tell of their week at RYLA. We will also be hosting senior management from the sponsors and charities.
Please register early when you receive the invite on 1st Aug as the room will be bursting at the seams with max seating capacity of 90.
