Sister Club (to Downtown Auckland Rotary), Osaka-Dojima Rotary Club, Osaka, Japan
The relationship between Downtown and Osaka-Dojima transcends many years. It is laden with a marvellous history of co-operation on funding and community service projects, life-long memories created via travel on the part of many members of both clubs between Osaka and Auckland, friendships that withstand the tests of time and change but most of all, mutual respect and empathy between two cultures that are so different and yet so much the same.
At the time of writing, the global Covid-19 pandemic has prevented the levels of engagement that the two clubs are used to - so far from 2020 through to 2022. However, we have just made a joint donation to the relief fund for Tonga (following the devastation caused by the eruptions of the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano, Dec 2021 - Jan 2022), a total close to NZ$12,000 achieved by a 50:50 contribution between the two clubs. We are delighted to have achieved this contribution together.
We also look forward to a return to the past with projects reinstated post-pandemic and the unadulterated camaraderie and fun Downtown and Osaka-Dojima have shared with respective in-person visits.
