President's Message

Our guest speaker this week was Angela Caughey.  After 14 years as a full-time carer for her husband Bryan who had dementia with lewy bodies, Angela wrote two books (Dealing Daily with Dementia and How to Communicate with Someone with Dementia- A guide for Carers) to help others cope with the challenges of taking care of loved ones with dementia.

Angela shared with us her view that growing old is normal and that while dementia is a brain disease that causes long-term and gradual decrease in the ability to think & remember (often affecting a person's daily functioning), the most important thing in caring for someone with dementia, is not to forget who the person is inside. Angela shared that while many think dementia is a condition that affects older people, there are also cases of early onset dementia (people in their 20's or 30's).  She said statistically, some of us in the room, may even be pre-disposed to dementia (ie. those who carry a specific gene) however, all of us can take steps to improve our brain health and defer the effects.

Angela is an avid researcher on dementia and shared with us a list of "Normal and Abnormal Memory Loss" as well as "14 steps to Brain Health". The first on the list is "EAT MORE DARK CHOCOLATE" and the last one is "Get a good night's sleep..stop using computers after dark". (See Stories below for Kenneth's computer tip).

Angela also shared with us The Lancet Commission's new life-course model which shows potentially modifiable, and non-modifiable risk factors for dementia. Please contact Phil Caughey (philip@wilsonandnicholson.co.nz) if you would like a copy of the handouts or if you'd like to purchase one of Angela's books.

During our Sargent's session, James #2 (Billing) & James #3 (Hook) surprised us with their lime scooter stories - eg. #2 clocking in 34km an hour while almost knocking down an old lady were it not for his agile cat like moves, and #3 about not being scared of blood and ambulances when he picked up a lime scooter that had been involved in a recent accident. Guess they both have pretty good luck, great life insurance policies, or a direct line to Dr. Bill!

At the end of our meeting we had a banner exchange with visitors Kiwi-born, Swedish Rotarian Robbyna Svard (aka Robyn Spencer) and her husband Bjorn Eisner from the Rotary Club of Helsingborg RAA-Ramlosa which has 45 members. Robbyna & Bjorn often visit Rotary Clubs when they travel and encouraged our members to do the same as a great way to meet likeminded people.

During our meeting Gill & Diane took a poll to see if we should change the date of our Rub Shoulders BBQ and it was agreed to move it to 17th March. Please mark your calendars. Diane has also organised a Greek band and No 1 Family Estate is sponsoring bubbles. It will be great fun.

Our speaker next week is author Michael Graham who will talk with us about "Secret SAS Missions in Africa". His book is thought to be the first to tell the story of a little known C Squadron of Special Air Service that operated in Africa from 1968-1980 to help counter communist terrorist operations.

On the 12th March, we are fortunate to have Brian Gaynor, CEO  Milford Asset Management speak with us. As we expect many members and non-members in attendance, we will open up registrations early. You can either book directly on our club website or through the email invitation sent to you by Dan Turkel. Seating is limited to 90 people so please register as soon as possible.

A last word on Mal's challenge, as of today I'm pleased to report that 20 members have generously contributed amounts ranging from $200-$5000 and that we have 5 weeks left to capture Mal's Challenge. This is a Club-wide membership initiative so please show your support and give whatever amount you can to help us leave a legacy which we all can be proud of.

Have a great weekend ahead & see you next Tuesday.

Lucy

Combat Computer Blue Light and Sleep Better
Angela Caughey (author of books on Dementia), recommends everyone to get a good nights sleep as a way to increase brain health. In addition to avoiding alcohol and caffeine after 7pm, she also recommends stop using computers, i-pads etc. after dark because of blue light emitted from these devices, interferes with melatonin production. For those of you who are addicted to your screens, Kenneth Winstone provides a solution to help you stay connected while combating computer blue light emissions.

Past President Kenneth Winstone recommends a software application that he has used the past 5 years which helps to avoid disrupting our circadian sleep rhythm from bright/blue light at night time from computers & mobile phones.  It's free for personal use & automatic.  See www.justgetflux.com/ for explanation & download.

Stories of Adventure in Sri Lanka, India, Sikkim & Nepal
Downtowners Mike Campbell, Graham Hendry & Greg Moyle were part of a group of 14 Rotarians and 5 friends of members who joined forces on a 28 day tour of Sri Lanka, India, Sikkim and Nepal. Mike & Sheryl extended their trip to 36 days so they could include other regions such as Rajastan & Mumbai. While Mike states the purpose was to enjoy 36 days of curry, the highlights show otherwise. Read more below.

(Report by Mike Campbell)
Travelling with a group of likeminded people, we had a very good tour leader and the trip was very well organised by the travel company. (I was the only one to lose my bags – on the first transfer from Hotel 1 on day 1 to Hotel 2 day 2 – but nothing a 6 hour taxi drive couldn’t fix.)
Amongst my personal highlights of the trip were:
  • appreciating a different culture, seeing their problems first hand and coming to an understand as to why the poverty exists to the extent it does.
  • observing Sheryl’s Mother Theresa attitude change over time (I think she realised she couldn’t save all the beggars who approached her).
  • seeing and understanding the achievements of past cultures of this part of the world, the buildings and architectural monuments have to be seen to be appreciated.
We attend an evening Rotary Meeting in Kolkata, a smaller club with 40 or so members who were in the main business people aged in the late 30’s to mid 40’s. In Sikkim the Rotary Club of Gangkok entertained us to an afternoon tea – a past President greeting us and I discovered he was the retired Secretary of State for Sikkim.

An eventful moment for Greg and I, being ex NZ Police members, was experiencing how the Indian Police gave our Tour Guide and Bus driver a shakedown for bribes on several occasions whilst we were in the Northern Himalayas – we need to utilize some of their skills for our Sergeant’s sessions.

Arriving home to Gods Own – no more tooting on the road and some normal plain kiwi food.

Mal's Challenge- Getting to $100K
On 29th May, Past President Gill announced "Mal's Challenge" to our Club and his desire to help build up our Club Trust by an additional $100,000!
Read more to find out why and how you can help make this happen by 31 March, 2019.

At the Annual General Meeting, members were presented with the various distributions made last year by our Club Trust to individuals and organisations in our community. These distributions and donations help change peoples lives. Fundraising is an important aspect of any service organisation as money is needed to do good work. We can either raise funds through events such as celebrity dinners/auctions, etc. or if we have enough capital to invest, we can use the interest earned to support our Causes.

As of 21 February, 2019 we have received donations and pledges of $43,200 from 17 members ranging in amounts from $200-$5000 . Mal has already committed $10,000 and is willing to bring it up his contribution to $50K if members are able to donate the remaining $6,800 by 31st March 2019.  Every amount helps bring us closer to the goal of capturing Mal's $50K. Please make your donation today.

All donations made to our Club Trust are tax deductible (which means you get up to 33.3% of your money back as a tax refund) and members will receive a receipt from our Treasurer Grant Hally.

If you would like to make a donation, you may do so directly to:
ROTARY CLUB OF DOWNTOWN AUCKLAND INC. CHARITABLE TRUST
Account: 12-3252-0053102-00

Feel free to contact Lucy or Grant Hally if you have any questions on the above.

This is a great opportunity for us to double the size of our Trust and to leave a legacy for future programs to help those in need.

What's the fuss around International Women's Day (IWD)- 8th March?
Even though I am a woman, I have to admit that "International Women's Day" didn't carry any significance for me until the last few years.
Growing up in Toronto, I was surrounded by people of all races & nationalities who all seemed to be working along side well together. I didn't have to think much about anti-sexism, anti-discrimination or gender equality issues. As I climbed up the corporate ladder- stories around "old boys network," "glass ceiling" and others started to surface and help me realise that we still have a way to go.

So why is International Women's Day important? What activities are happening around Auckland for people (like me) to learn and gain more perspective?
