President's Message
member photo
The first days of spring brought to our club some “out of the box” thinking with our guest speaker Craig Simpson, MD of iVise, challenging us with his topic “Are too many kids going to university.” Craig opened his story by sharing his experience in a commercial acumen training course conducted by Boston Consulting Group where his lack of formal business degree, provided him with an edge over the others who were constrained by “group think.” Craig provided some arguments about how institutionalized learning has impaired creativity and as a consequence, it does not always make financial or practical sense to send kids to university as a pathway for gaining skills or to have a fulfilling life. Rather life experiences, exploring creativity, and possibly revisiting trades may be a better path for some kids who may not want to go to university.

Speaking of pathways, our Foundation Director and Past President Wayne Dyer was our 5-minute speaker today and he shared with our members more information about the Rotary Foundation and how it can be a pathway for us to gain funds for local or global projects. A successful example of how these funds can be leveraged for good is the District Project initiated by John Boscawen that supports micro-financing of women-owned small businesses in Fiji. For more information on how to apply for District or Global Grants, please contact Wayne or click here for the presentation.

Finally, during our August Board meeting, Kat Trevor shared a fantastic way for us to support the families at Ronald McDonald House by donating a veggie box that the families can use during their stay. Each box costs $41. In addition to exploring whether we can leverage KiwiHarvest as a future source for fresh veggies, we will pilot the use of funds from one sargents’ session each month to go towards supporting a veggie box for the families. We will use fines collected from next week’s sargents’ session to buy our first veggie box. If you’d like more information please contact Kat.

Have a wonderful week & see you next Tuesday!

All the best,
Lucy

Fundraising Results from Breakfast with Craig Heatley
Fantastic Result of our First Fundraiser of the Year: $28,689.60 for Youth Development and Leadership Programs
Many thanks to Craig Heatley, private donors, our members, and supporters of Rotary who helped make this a success!
What a fantastic fundraiser we had with Craig Heatley and Peter Williams! The energy and buzz in the room was electric as 90 people came together to hear how Craig became a successful Kiwi entrepreneur. Craig candidly shared engaging stories through different chapters of his life. Starting from when he made his first cold call at the age of 12 while living in Upper Hutt, to when he did some hardcore negotiations with Kerry Packard, Rupert Murdoch, and 4 major American corporates while at Sky. He even shared some insights as to what it’s like to be a member of the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club.

This was also a wonderful opportunity to showcase our Rotary Youth Development Programs and to raise funds that enable us to positively impact the lives of young people.

During the breakfast, Craig Heatley surprised us with an offer of $12,500 to our cause if we are able to generate the other $12,500 from our event. Thanks to everyone’s contribution we have raised $1133.75 from our raffle, $2055.85 from our ticket sales, and the rest from private donations. A special thanks to Ray Stonelake for his $500 donation. Also a big thank you to one of our members who has generously matched Craig's offer of $12,500. This means that we have raised a combined total of $28,689.60.

This is fantastic news and exemplifies how great things happen when we all work closely together towards the end goal!!

A special note of thanks to James Billing (event chair), Gill Johnston, Carole Buckley, Frankie Crellin, Graham Hendry, Dan Turkel, Tony Gardner and Karyn Spencer for your awesome help in making the day a success. Thanks also to David Graham for leading the overall fundraising efforts and to John Graham of Paperplus for the ongoing partnership.

Congratulations to our lucky raffle winners:
