We were very fortunate at breakfast on Tuesday to hear from one of our newest members, Harley Pope.
Harley shared his background in the armed services for more than 20 years, including postings in Malaya (as it was referred to then) and Northern Ireland, plus his role with the Brain Injury Association, and also as president of the Illminster Rotary Club.
Harley, 5 minutes just wasn't enough to delve into this fascinating background and we will get you in for a full slot shortly. In the mean time, this small snapshot was great - many thanks.
Nick Tuitasi, Director of Family First, joined us for breakfast on Tuesday.
Nick discussed Family First's views on the pending referendum on cannabis, including comparisons to similar reforms in other countries. Nick's presentation was insightful and very engaging - thanks Nick, very much appreciated.
Heather Robinson, Co-Director for Youth/AGGS, highlighted the Fashion Fundraising event on Wed 23 October.
Below is a flyer with the key details. Note that funds raised go to support our continuing support to Youth/Auckland Girls Grammar School (AGGS) programs. An example of the success of our work with AGGS was highlighted by Heather whereby two teams in the Young Enterprise Scheme made it through to the Regional Finals on 21 October.
On Tuesday morning, Kenneth Winstone - Director for the Trees for Surivival cause - provided an update on the activities of their commitee.
In recent months, the club has supported several schools in planting trees under the program, with many club members volunteering to attend planting days, and the plan is for this to continue going forward. The schools we have supported include:
- Meadowbank Primary School
- Remuera Intermediate School
- Ponsonby Primary School
- King's School, Remuera
- Freemans Bay Primary School
We are also grateful to have corporate sponsors to cover the costs of these programs, those sponsors being: New World Remuera, Ray White Ponsonby and Placemakers Cook Street.
John Boscawen, as Foundation Director, provided a further update on the upcoming District fundraising project to address our continuing fight to end polio. Several members have already put their hands up to participate and more are always welcome. The key details are reproduced again below for reference - more details to follow.
Districts 9920 and 9910 (which combined cover nearly 100 clubs)are collaborating to hold an event 'Polio All Trains' on the Auckland Transport Network on Friday 1 November. This is based on the All Stations event held in Sydney in 2018 when $250,000 was raised for End Polio. (The photo below is from that Sydney event.)
For the event, a team - dressed in red End Polio apparel - will ride the Auckland Transport Train Network and at each station visited there will be a local Rotary Club (also dressed in red End Polio apparel) who will symbolically hand over a cheque for the End Polio Campaign to the Polio Team riding the trains.
Auckland Transport have given permission for us to undertake this event and to collect donations from passengers travelling on the trains and at the stations. There will be a timetable of when the train with the Polio Riders will arrive at each club’s designated station. Rotarian 'Riders' can ride free on the network as long as they are wearing a red End Polio Shirt. It is suggested that each Rotarian 'Rider' arranges sponsorship from friends and families to raise money whilst they ride the trains e.g. $1 per station.
John has helped the organisers arrange for David Seymour to attend to help raise the profile of the event - David has also written to the leaders of the other parties to encourage them to engage as well.
If you're keen on getting involved get in touch with John. (Timetable for our club 'station' to follow.)
At breakfast on Tuesday morning, David Graham provided an update on Christmas Box for 2019. Several members have already expressed interest in this and more are welcome. The key details are reproduced below again for reference.
Christmas Box is a food box that caters to a family of 4-6, helping supplement breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for over a week.
The program started as a grassroots local initiative, delivering Christmas gift-wrapped food boxes to neighbouring families in need. Since starting in 2001, over 100,000 Christmas Boxes have been delivered, supporting over 500,000 New Zealanders.
For every $30 donated, one Christmas Box is provided to a New Zealand family. 100% of the donation goes into providing the Christmas Box.
Leading up to Christmas, there is also a packing day on 7 December 2019, where volunteers get together to pack the boxes. You can register for the packing day at this link: https://christmasbox.co.nz/packing
